I just don't know what to do with myself

Now I'm down to just having one full time job (like most normally people) rather than the one and half jobs I've had the past couple of years, I will have a lot of free time on my hands. I really don't want to just end up sitting around watching television. I want to do something useful with my time.

Obviously 'Project Flat-Hunt' will take up a bit of time, but I feel I need some other purpose (I really do have trouble just relaxing!). I would ideally like to spend my time going to see more theatre and films but theatre especially is expensive (despite working in the industruy, I really don't get much in the way of freebies or discounts). So I'm looking out for inexpensive activities to occupy my mind.

So far I've decided I'm going to have a huge spring clean (somewhat out of season) and aim to read all of the books on the Booker Shortlist. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Digital photography! OK, the camera costs a bit, but you don't have any deveopment costs. It's also cheap to improve - no paying out for rubbish shots.

I was actually think about photography. I own a proper camera and did try to learn how to use it properly on a course once but the teacher was rubbish so I might investigate doing something on that again. I do want to get a digital camera though but think I might try & get one of my OH for Christmas (& probably birthday combined to get a decent one).

My Suggestions:

Read a lot
Paint
Draw
Get involved in a charity
Write
Take photos
Go to a gallery

..all of which are pretty cheap or free.

I can't paint or draw having no artistic talent whatsoever.

Cooking?

How about an evening class? In something you've always wanted to do: a language, maybe?

Do you like acting? Or would joining a drama group feel too much like being in your day job?

voluntary work?

Hmm, sorry I'm not very good at this ...I spent my unemployment mainly blogging (and going on Handbag lol)... but I find I'm very easily occupied ;)

Voluntary work is difficult - I've just given up a voluntary position that started to take over my life. I used to do voluntary backstage theatre work a few years ago which I do miss but that was too much committment as well - 6-12 most nights for a month after a full days work!

I really want something to occupy me that I can just dip into. I think photography and cooking are probably good places to start.

I was learning to speak Spanish a couple of years ago but had to stop - I was doing it as well as 2 jobs and a post-grad course. But I might return to it now I have more time.
