A rose by any other name

There was a story in the news this week about a New Zealand judge changing a 9 year old girl's name and making her a ward of court. The cruel parents called her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. What were they thinking?

When I was at home in the north briefly last weekend, I commented on a young child who was playing dangerously in the road. I was informed that he wasn't from the nicest of families.

His name was Dante. Not a name you'd expect from a white Norther family, but it got worse. Dante is one of four children.

Mercedes
Dante
Charisma (this is a girl)

and

Simon!

As boring as it might be, I think Simon had been most fortunate.

(Apologies to anyone reading who is called any of these names, but they aren't traditional working class northern names and sound particularly daft in this context. Elsewhere, I'm sure they are fine.)

Apart from Charisma, none of them are particularly novel though...nor cruel I would have thought...in fact I always thought Mercedes was a beautiful name.

I like the contrast between Simon and Dante.

The Talulah parents must have been insane to call the poor child that. Apparently she calls herself 'K'.

I posted about this on my blog, too. (Great minds think alike!) When I was a child, I grumbled once to my mother about my name. We lived in a small farm village in central Illinois. There were 35 children in my class, and SEVEN of us were named Cathy. (I much prefer "Cathy" to "Talulah".) She told me about a family who lived in a city to the north. Their surname was Butt. They had two children, a boy and a girl, named Harold and Rose. The trouble is, the parents never referred to their children as Harold or Rose, they called them Harry and Rosie--extremely unfortunate with that surname. As soon as they were of legal age, they changed their names. I don't think I ever complained about my name again....

I saw then talking about this on the news! They went thru a list of names that had been passed and not allowed recently. A mother was not allowed to call her twins fish and chips but another called hers benson and hedges! Another was allowed to call her son violence but they passed on no 16 bus shelter. Madness!
